National Case Writing and Analysis Workshop In Association with AIMS, Hyderabad, March 28-30, 2011

A case is the vehicle by which a chunk of reality is brought into the classroom to be worked over by the class and the instructor. It is an account of an administrative problem or situation in a real or imaginary organization. It allows students to balance theory with practice. Educators in management field recognized that it was not enough to teach the generic principles and practices of a profession.  It was equally if not more important to equip the student to cope with a variety of scenarios, so that he or she would be able to adapt easily to the wide range of work situations found within his or her chosen profession.

The case method is a powerful approach to teaching and learning business subjects. It  puts the student in the problem solver’s shoes, it  does not provide answers.  Rather, it raises questions and allows the student to work through the decision-making process and find his or her preferred solution. Its main advantage is that it is a “question-oriented”, as opposed to solution-based, approach of teaching and learning. It allows students to participate in “real-life” decision making processes. Learning by the case method adds a dimension to the learning process that instills the confidence to be creative, and to make appropriate decisions.

For faculty authors, case development instills an intimacy with the curriculum, creates teaching materials that are most closely aligned with teaching objectives, and brings real-world experience into the classroom. Due to lack of relevant and current scenario based cases there emerges a need of writing and developing case. Writing a case is requires skills. A case has to have a hook: an overriding issue that pulls various parts together, a managerial issue or decision that requires urgent attention.
