Academic Excellence and Personality Development through Group Discussion

The Institute conducted few sessions on personality development and group discussion. Ms. Veena Dadwani was the Key Note speaker who said that Group Discussion is a methodology or in a simple language may call it an interview process or a group activity. The Institute uses it as one of the best tools to make students get select in the prospective candidates in a comparative perspective. As GD may be used by an interviewer, or any Institute or organization, by different types of management competitions, we consider it as an important part of our curriculum. 

The trainer gauges the candidate on certain personality traits and/or skills that he/she requires in an organization. In this methodology, the group of candidates is given a topic or a situation, given a few minutes to think about the same, and then asked to discuss the topic among themselves for 15-20 minutes. It is a very useful tool to screen the candidate's potential as well as their skills. 

GD evaluation is done by the subject experts based on the discussions. A report is prepared on analyzing the facts at the end of the discussion.

Some of the personality traits the GD tried to measure included:

• Communication skills

• Interpersonal Skills

• Leadership Skills

• Motivational Skills

• Team Building Skills

• Analytical /Logical Skills

• Reasoning ability

• Different Thinking

• Initiative

• Assertiveness

• Flexibility

• Creativity

Why GDs are implemented commonly:

The reason why institutes put the students through a Group discussion and an interview, after testing your technical and conceptual skills in an exam, is to get to know as a person and gauge how well the student will fit in their institute. GD evaluates how the student can function as a part of a team, as a manager or as a member of an organization .Therefore how to interact in a team becomes an important criterion for selection. Managers have to work in a team and get best results out of teamwork. That is the reason why management institutes include GD as a component of the selection procedure. 

Company's Perspective:

• Companies conduct group discussion after the written test to know more about:

• Interactive Skills (how good the students are at communication with other people)

• Behavior (how open-minded are they in accepting views contrary to their own)

• Participation (how good an active speaker they are & attention to the discussion)

• Contribution (how much importance do they give to the group objective as well as their own)

Pioneer Institute of Professional studies organizes special workshops of GDPI every year. This year also institute conducted workshop for MBA III students at Board Room. The students enjoyed this activity and understood the importance of Personality Traits like Communication skills, Interpersonal Skills, Leadership Skills, Motivational Skills, Team Building Skills, Analytical /Logical Skills in Corporate world.

GDPI being an important part of management courses plays a pivotal role in development of students. It was mandatory for each student to be groomed his own identity. Here the student wants to speak but is not comfortable with English Language and confidence is not up to the mark. So they hesitate to speak. Vocabulary part & grammar sentence formation needs to be worked out.

General awareness and knowledge of current affairs were too less. Reading of Newspaper and updating of knowledge is required.

As few students belong to small places, they need to polish some personality traits like Public speaking, Presentation skills and confidence level.
